Nilima Desai has a B.A. in Psychology from the University of Mumbai (India) and has been an active member of the community in Massachusetts for over 30 years. She has participated in many volunteer, cultural, and educational activities over the years in addition to raising two daughters in Lincoln, MA.

Among her many contributions, she was a volunteer teacher of language and history at an Indian community school called Shishu Bharati. She organized a day-long program of Indian culture and literature at Lincoln Public Library in Massachusetts. She was a board member of the Indian American Forum for Political Education (Massachusetts Chapter) and also a co-chair of the annual fundraiser for internships in political offices. Most recently, Nilima was a key force in planning and organizing the Gateway Bombay exhibit at the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, MA.
